The PFA is pleased to support Man On.

‘Man On’ is a weekly community programme for men of all ages and abilities.

Open to all men, everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy a game of football at a number of clubs around the province, followed by refreshments.

The ‘Man On’ initiative was first rolled out a year and a half ago by former Northern Ireland international Jeff Hughes, Davy McDaid and Johnny McMurray.

The programme is currently running in a number of Irish League Clubs including Coleraine, Larne and Carrick Rangers. It is fantastic to see those clubs supporting the initiative and opening the doors to the local community to come and engage with current and former players.

“Man On’ is all about football, friendship and open conversation,” explained Jeff.

“The football side is obviously good for helping everyone’s fitness.

“The main aim though for us is the mental health aspect and anything that encourages men to socialise and talk can only be a good thing.”

Jeff, Davy and Johnny have also teamed up with Extern.

“People who come to ‘Man On’ can join a WhatsApp group,” continued Jeff.

“Within the chat is a link to Extern which is a fantastic mental health support service which provides counselling and a wide range of services.”

Man On recently launched its Coleraine kickabout.
“We were delighted with the response for opening night,” added Davy.
“We had around 20 people which was great for out first time. “When we started out at Larne there was only about half a dozen to begin with.

“The feedback was terrific and really positive.

“It is something that lies close to my heart. I have always tried to do things around mental health because I know how big an issue it is,” .

“Men don’t like talking about it. They prefer to hold in their emotions and avoid sharing things. I know what it is like. There is a stigma in society that men can’t cry or show weaknesses. But that shouldn’t be the case. They should be encouraged to share their feelings and emotions without being judged.

“I have grown up around football and you do carry a lot of pressures and issues around. You don’t share them.

The PFA are delighted to support this initiative and will be carrying the message to clubs around the province on behalf of Davy, Jeff and Jonny to encourage them to get involved and promote this excellent way for people to come together through football. Improving Mental Wellbeing is at the forefront of what we do as an association. These evenings can also have a positive impact on those who live in social isolation, giving them somewhere to come and interact with other members of the community
