    PFA & Kingsbridge Partnership

Kingsbridge Provide Women’s Premiership Players with medical support package

PFA Northern Ireland is proud to announce a new partnership with Kingsbridge Private Hospital Group, that represents a significant step forward in the protection and welfare of players competing in the NIFL Women’s Premiership, ensuring that all registered players are covered with enhanced medical support and access to professional healthcare services, as the new season gets underway.

PFA NI CEO Michael Carvill emphasised the importance of this development in safeguarding players:

“This partnership is particularly timely in terms of protecting our female players with research from FIFPRO and Leeds Beckett University highlighting the increased risk of ACL injuries in the women’s game. It’s critical that we respond with meaningful action.

“By working with Kingsbridge, we are taking another important step to improve player welfare and safety, while also supporting performance through enhanced medical provision and greater professionalism within the game.”

Carvill also highlighted the wider impact on clubs and the sustainability of the women’s game:

“Clubs are also carrying significant risk when players are not adequately insured. The financial burden associated with serious injuries can be a major factor, and without proper cover, players may be forced to step away from the game or retire early due to costs. This partnership helps protect not only players, but also clubs, ensuring the long-term stability and growth of the women’s game.”

This initiative reflects PFA Northern Ireland’s ongoing commitment to raising standards across women’s football and ensuring players are properly supported both on and off the pitch.

Announcing the new collaboration, Fiona Dowds, Head of Sales & Business Development at Kingsbridge Private Hospital Group said:

“Kingsbridge are delighted to be partnering with PFA Northern Ireland to support players in the NIFL Women’s Premiership, showing our strong commitment to women’s health, player welfare, and clinical excellence across all levels of sport.

“We know how demanding the game can be, and how important it is for players to get the right care when they need it. Through this partnership, players will benefit from fast access to diagnostics, consultant appointments, and surgical treatment if required, all through a clear and straightforward pathway.

“Kingsbridge is already trusted by elite athletes, teams, and champions across a range of sports, and we are pleased to offer that same level of expertise and care to the women’s game here in Northern Ireland. By working alongside PFA Northern Ireland, we can help to continue to raise standards, protect players, and support the continued growth and professionalism of women’s football.”

PFA Northern Ireland would also like to thank All Sport Insurance for their continued support in helping make this partnership possible and for their ongoing commitment to protecting our members.

With the NIFL Women’s Premiership season now commencing, the partnership ensures that players will benefit immediately from improved medical coverage and care throughout the campaign.

Taking a Big Step Against Gambling Harm:

PFA Northern Ireland Supports Stormont Five-a-Side Event

The PFA Northern Ireland was proud to support The Big Step five-a-side football campaign, an innovative initiative raising awareness of the harms caused by gambling and calling for tighter regulations on gambling advertising in sport.

Held at The Pavilion, Stormont, the event brought together cross-party MLAs, Irish TDs, players’ associations, and campaigners in a spirited five-a-side tournament aimed at sending a powerful message: it’s time to protect young people from gambling exposure in sport.

    A Unified Call for Change

The tournament was more than just a match; it was a statement. The Big Step campaign, run by Gambling With Lives with support from PFA NI and Chambre P.A, highlights the risks of gambling addiction and challenges the scale of gambling marketing across football and other sports. With support from the All-Party Group on Reducing Harm Related to Gambling, campaigners emphasised the urgent need for legislative and regulatory updates in Northern Ireland to match developments elsewhere.

Dr Paul Kitchen from University of Ulster also attended the event and gave a synopsis of the recent gambling survey that was conducted with male and female players across the Irish League. Some worrying trends have been discovered amongst players and the full details of the survey will be published soon.

Philip McGuigan, chair of the All-Party Group, reinforced the campaign’s message, calling for stronger protections for young people from gambling marketing and sponsorship in sport.

Players and Associations Leading the Way

PFA Northern Ireland, alongside PFA Ireland, the Gaelic Players Association, and Rugby Players Ireland, proudly participated, lending their voice and visibility to the campaign. By joining the tournament, these organisations highlighted the crucial role players and sports bodies play in advocating for safer, healthier sporting environments.

The PFA and RPI team was made up of ex Crusaders and Portadown player Howard Beverland, Ex Glentoran and Crues player Stevie Livingstone, ex Linfield, Crues and Dungannon and PFA CEO – Michael Carvill, PFA NI Operations and Committee Member – Paul Mooney and from Rugby Players Ireland former Ulster Rugby and Ireland internationals Paul and Luke Marshall

    Why This Matters

Research cited by The Big Step campaign shows that young people in Northern Ireland are heavily exposed to gambling advertising, often through televised football matches and social media. Campaigners urge action, including:

Ending or significantly restricting gambling sponsorship in sport

Introducing a broadcasting watershed for gambling ads

Strengthening social media regulation to reduce youth exposure

With approximately 1.4 million people in the UK affected by gambling addiction, and thousands of gambling-related harms reported annually, the campaign underscores the urgent need for change.

    A Step Forward

The Stormont five-a-side event was a reminder that sport has the power to lead social change. By working together, politicians, players, and campaigners can shine a light on gambling harms and push for policies that protect the next generation.

The PFA Northern Ireland remains committed to supporting initiatives like The Big Step campaign and advocating for the well-being of players across Northern Ireland.
We will continue to work with our recently formed Player Support Group made up of current players who have suffered gambling related issues.

During the recent international games we were pleased to meet with Women’s Player Of The Year Danielle Maxwell and Young Player Of The Year Keri Halliday.

Both players received their framed shirts and a £300 House Of Fraser voucher from CEO Michael Carvill.

There is no bigger individual honour in sport than being recognised by your fellow peers as the best player they have faced or played with.
The 2024 season was a fine one for both players with Danielle picking up another league title at Cliftonville and Keri forcing her way into the Northern Ireland squad along with starring regularly for Linfield in their 3rd place finish.

The PFA NI hope to establish a bespoke awards evening in late 2025 that recognises both the talent and growing professionalism in the Women’s game.

Organisers of the newly formed Professional Footballers’ Association Northern Ireland, set up to represent the interest of players in the men’s and women’s Premiership and the Championship, hope for the body to be up and running by the start of next season.

Players’ Union in NI set to get go ahead

    27 September 2020

A new Players’ Union should be up and running in Northern Ireland before Christmas, Sunday Life Sport has learned.

Mental health initiatives and legal rights advice for players top the list of services to be made available to players in Northern Ireland by the new body.

Traditionally a part-time game, the Irish League has not had a PFA or any sort of union to go to for advice and support, in contrast to the rest of the UK.

But changes are afoot as many leading clubs move to a full-time model, buoyed by lucrative European money.
